Our Fruitless Search

On Saturday we decided to become true Idahoans and partake in one of the favorite local pastimes, huckleberry picking. For those of you who have never heard of huckleberries (like my husband) they are delicious little round purplish berries found growing on little bushes in the woods. I grew up in Montana/Idaho so I have had my share of the delightful little berries, but none of my children or my husband have ever had the pleasure of hunting for, or eating them. After asking around we thought we had a pretty good grasp on a location to go picking. We loaded the kids up in the van, grabbed our buckets, our GPS, and a gun (“just in case we see a bear” a.k.a. Tobey just wanted to bring his gun) and headed out on our adventure. We drove to a location that looked promising and headed up the mountainside....To make a long story short we had a great time hiking, looking at scenery, having a picnic, and getting bit by mosquitoes, but we did not find a SINGLE huckleberry. Apparently it is an art to find the patches. Although we did not glean any huckleberries on this trip we are determined to get some before the season is out and we are headed out tonight with some seasoned huckleberry pickers to learn from them and hopefully come home with at least a pint of berries. Wish us luck!

looks like a lot of fun! Too bad you didn't find any. You just need to go up to Birch Creek and look. Plus, I think next time you should make Tobey carry the baby. You already carried her for 9 months. :) Just KIDDING!
